Cloze
Test Exercises - Several words from a
text are omitted and for every gap you are given four choices. You have to
decide which of the four words or phrases best fits the gap.
Example: You're always
taking me for .........!
A) bought
B) treasured C) granted
D) possessed
The right answer is C
- it best completes the phrase "to take somebody for granted".
Open Cloze Exercises
- Several words from a text are omitted and you have to guess what the word is,
this time making it out on your own. It can be part of a pattern, a preposition,
a connector, a determiner, etc.
Example: I don't seem to
know this word, I'll ...... it up in a dictionary.
The right answer is 'look'.
The meaning of the sentence is 'I do not know the word so I'll check its
meaning'
Word Formation Exercises
- Several words from a text are omitted and for every gap you are given the root
of the word or a word with the same root.
Example: I work as a
........... for the local department store.
SELL
You need a word for the person who
SELLs. That is a salesperson. Depending on the context it
can be a man or a woman, respectively salesman or saleswoman.
Gapped Sentences
Exercises - One and the same word is
removed from three sentences. Nevertheless, it can serve different purposes.
Example:
I can't ......... up with you any
longer, you're so annoying!
He won't stay ......... He's so
fidgety a child!
Polly ....... the kettle on and we
all had tea.
The first sentence has the meaning 'I cannot stand you!' and the missing word is
part of a pattern.
In the second sentence the same word is an adjective. The clue is from 'fidgety'
which means 'unable to relax'.
In the third sentence the word is used in its literal meaning.
The missing word is 'put'
Error
Identification - Three parts of a
sentence are underlined. One of them may be incorrect or they may all be
correct.
Example:
I went downtown to look for
some really good wardrobes for my childrens' room. No error.
The incorrect part is childrens'.
It should be children's. Compare: kids',
boys', but men's.
